What is it?
The 1st Nespresso Participatory Observatory was born from the Nespresso program for Italy and from the experience in circularity practices and impact on the territory. A collective look at the opinions and concrete needs of Italians on the issues of environmental and social sustainability in our territory. For how they are today, but above all for how they could change in the future.
Goal and investigation
The observatory aims to investigate Italian opinions regarding the circular economy, the impact on local communities and the role of companies in this journey. The aim is to involve Italy in the concrete design choices of the coming years, helping to build the Nespresso journey for Italy and with Italy.

1. Sustainability: basic attitudes and perceptions
Sustainability is increasingly linked to quality of life.
79% of Italians interviewed agree.
People perceive a direct connection between environmental protection, quality of life, economy and rights. In fact, sustainability guides the purchasing choices of 8 out of 10 consumers. Millennials are among the most attentive.
What can companies do in the social and environmental field?
- Reduce environmental but also social impact.
- Activate policies of equity and justice for their people.
- Support the community and the territory in which it operates.

2. Environmental sustainability and circular economy
The circular economy is a key issue for protecting the environment.
For 38% of Italians interviewed it is crucial.
For 56% it could be crucial.
Among those interviewed, 56% (especially young people) are skeptical that the circular economy will be able to spread enough to be effective. Pro-recycling and reuse projects, and packaging precautions, on the other hand, receive greater trust.

3. Social Sustainability and Community
What actions does the community expect from companies?
- Environmental recovery and protection.
- Redevelopment of territories in difficulty, with water resource management, flood prevention and development of urban green areas.
- Education and involvement for young people, with research funding activities and the creation of new jobs.
