From the Ground Up
Nespresso’s coffee masters travel the world in search of terroirs where the land naturally offers the aromas and taste they’re seeking.

We carefully select our coffees then work closely with farmers to enhance nature’s gifts, elevating an everyday experience and inviting you to explore the exceptional. Once found, they partner with farmers to craft harvesting and processing methods to bring out these flavour characteristics.

Whether that means late harvesting Castillo cherries in Colombia, fermenting beans using the meticulous black honey process in Nicaragua, or embracing Indonesia’s humid climate and adopting a wet-hulling method: every harvesting, roasting, and blending decision is designed to enhance the taste, aromas, and flavour profile of each coffee — bringing you unforgettable taste, cup after cup.
The Nespresso Sustainable Quality Plan
Like all precious things, the most exceptional coffees must be carefully protected. At the heart of our approach is the Nespresso Sustainable Quality Plan, created more than 20 years ago based on the Rainforest Alliance sourcing standard.
The Nespresso Plan has grown since then, but still has one clear goal: to secure the long-term supply of the high-quality coffees you love.

Once our experts have selected a terroir, they identify farmers whose coffee shows potential to meet Nespresso’s profile and quality requirements.

We then invite them to join the Nespresso Plan, where they commit to develop their practices not only for quality, but to support the local ecosystem — from soil health to shade cover to water conservation.

More than 90% of our coffee comes from farms participating in the Nespresso Sustainable Quality Plan, which sets out 100+ criteria including coffee growing, farm management, and workers’ rights.
We source from only 1% -2% of the world’s coffee farmers, whose coffee meets Nespresso’s high standards of quality, sustainability and profile.

Reviving nature
As climate change intensifies, the natural ecosystems on which coffee depends come under increasing threat.
Sustaining nature is no longer enough: we must go further and help it recover. That’s why the Nespresso Plan is now working with farmers on a journey to regenerative agriculture. It’s a way of farming that actively supports nature’s processes, allowing ecosystems to heal and restore balance.
Rather than trying to control the impacts of nature, regenerative agricultural methods work in partnership with the landscape. By promoting soil health, encouraging biodiversity, and supporting native species, farmers create the conditions coffee needs to thrive.
This approach is tailored to each terroir. Our field teams of experts use the Nespresso Plan criteria to help farmers assess their land and introduce solutions like tree planting to fight erosion, planting cover crops to nourish the soil, or introducing beehives to encourage biodiversity — while ensuring smallholders’ incomes are protected.
When Craft and Nature Meet
When it comes to coffee, what does ‘quality’ really mean?

For Nespresso, quality goes beyond taste. By working closely with farmers, we’re able to harness the intrinsic properties of the land and its impact on coffee quality and profile, and craft a balance between taste, terroir, and protecting these precious coffees for the future.
Like beauty, quality is in the eye of the beholder.Rather than simply following trends, we embrace the unique qualities that come from nature to find taste experiences which defy convention.

Take Robusta coffee, often considered to be a lesser variety. We believe that when handled and roasted with care, attention, and respect for the natural environment, Robusta offers a distinctive experience that deserves to be celebrated. Nespresso fans agree – and Robusta holds a place of pride in our beloved blends and single origins.
Most coffee is sourced on the open market. However, we take a different approach: building direct relationship with farmers, allowing our experience to complement their craftsmanship while helping to nurture the land and protecting the future of exceptional coffees.
Through this collaboration between Nespresso, farmers, and nature, we’re able to bring you unforgettable taste today while helping to regenerate natural ecosystems so that precious coffee is protected, not just for tomorrow but for generations to come.
