The Nespresso Recycling Program
Our recycling program offers easy ways to recycle your used coffee capsules.
Our Aluminum Capsules Are Recyclable and Truly Recycled
Our local recycling program in Jordan is powered by a dedicated facility operated by Development Incorporated. With a custom-built separation machine designed by Nespresso, we recycle every capsule by separating the aluminum from the coffee grounds. The aluminum is reused to create new products, while the coffee grounds enrich local farmland soil—helping grow fresh produce you’ll find in nearby supermarkets.

Nespresso capsules are made with responsibly sourced, infinitely recyclable aluminum.

Aluminum is the best material to protect the freshness and aromas of your coffee.

Nespresso capsules are recyclable and recycled through our recycling program.

Coffee grounds go back to the earth as rich compost.

The recycled Nespresso capsules are given a second life and used to create a variety of aluminum-based products.

Recycling Made Easy
All Nespresso coffee capsules are fully recycled at Development Incorporated’s recycling facility in Jordan. Using a custom-made separation machine developed by Nespresso, we are able to separate the aluminum and coffee grounds. The aluminum is reused to create new aluminum products. The leftover coffee grounds are used as soil to help grow produce which you can find at your local supermarkets.
How are my capsules recycled? What happens with them?
This specialized machine is able to separate the aluminum and coffee grounds. Using a mechanical process, the coffee is sent up on a conveyor belt and into a shredder, which opens the capsules and sends the coffee into a trommel. The trommel rotates 360 degrees where the coffee grounds exit through gravity and the aluminum exits out the end of the trommel. The aluminum undergoes further recycling at a steel smelter where it is reused to make new aluminum products. The coffee grounds are given to the Development Incorporated Farms to use as a soil additive—improving the soil conditions in Jordan to grow produce which we buy every day. Coffee is a globally accepted composting solution that uses food waste to serve as nutrient-rich soil food. The aluminum is transformed into new products.
