We believe a limescale-free Nespresso coffee machine is a prerequisite for perfect coffee moments. To ensure you can enjoy the full aroma profile of Nespresso daily, descale your Nespresso machine regularly.
Knowing how to descale a Nespresso machine helps maintain high performance of your Original or Vertuo model while delivering long-lasting coffee enjoyment like on the first day.
Why should I descale my Nespresso coffee machine?
Descaling your Nespresso coffee machine is essential for keeping it running efficiently and consistently creating high-quality coffee drinks. Tap water is usually richer in calcium and magnesium, sometimes referred to as calcareous. Over time, it leaves traces of limescale in your coffee machine, which can greatly affect the taste of your coffee. Descaling also removes coffee oils from pipes within the machine. Aside from this, descaling your coffee or espresso machine carries a wealth of advantages you may not already know:
- Longer lifespan: Descaling removes limescale buildup, helping your machine to last longer.
- Fewer repairs: Regular descaling removes any limescale deposits, which can help prevent damage and reduce the need for repairs.
- Temperature regulation: By keeping internal components clean, descaling ensures that your coffee always comes out of the machine at the optimal temperature.
- Less noise: Scale buildup can make the machine louder, so removing scale can help to keep your machine running smoothly and quietly.
- Taste: Removal of mineral deposits can impart off-flavours and alter the brewing temperature and water flow, leading to a richer, more flavourful, and smooth brew.
When to descale your Nespresso machine
Many coffee machines from the Original and Vertuo ranges feature automatic programs that alert you when it's time to descale your Nespresso machine. Please refer to your user manual for machine specific descaling alerts.
However, it's important to descale your coffee machine every three to four months or every 300 capsules whichever comes first, regardless of whether you live in a region with soft or hard water. Your coffee consumption also plays a large role in the regularity of descaling; the more frequently you use the machine, the quicker limescale can build up.
Nespresso descaling instructions
The descaling process is essential for maintaining the performance of both the Original and Vertuo coffee machines. The process may vary slightly depending on your specific machine, its size and how often you use it. Below, we will take you through each step of descaling your Nespresso machine to help it keep working at optimal performance.
Step 1: Disassemble, wash and reassemble
Take your machine apart by removing the lid, drip tray and pod container. Give each of these components a good, thorough soap wash in warm water. While you leave these parts out to dry after rinsing them, wipe down the body of your machine with a damp, soapy cloth. Once all the components have dried up, it's time to reassemble them so the descaling process can begin.
This step typically takes about an hour, although times may vary. Refer to your user manual for more specific information on this step.
Step 2: Prepare your Nespresso descaling kit
The Nespresso descaling kit is designed to gently remove the limescale that builds up in your machine over time, helping your coffee taste great today as it did on the first day. Check your user manual to see how many sachets of the descaling agent to use - some machines, like the Nespresso Vertuo Creatista, require more than others. Pour the descaling solution into the water tank of your machine, before filling the rest with clean water.
Step 3: Start the descaling process
Begin by making sure that your machine is set to its descaling mode. For the Original system, this usually involves holding down both the espresso and lungo buttons for a few seconds. Once the buttons begin to blink, press the lungo button to allow the descaling agent to run through your machine. Collect the liquid in a large container, such as a jug, and pour its contents back into the water tank to repeat the rinsing cycle.
For machines using the Vertuo system such as Pop and Next, this usually involves holding down the button for a few seconds until it starts to rapidly blink. Once the button begins to blink, hold the button for a few seconds in `unlocked` position. To start descaling, lock the machine and push on the button to allow the descaling agent to run through your machine. Collect the liquid in a large container, such as a jug, and pour its contents back into the water tank to repeat the rinsing cycle.
Please refer to your user manual for machine specific descaling instructions.
Step 4: Run it through clean water
Carefully clean the water tank and wipe down the inside of your machine to remove any remaining traces of the descaling agent. Finally, fill up the water tank with clean water to flush out any remaining agent.
Guidance for descaling Nespresso Professional machines may differ from the information above, due to the way they are built and programmed. If you have purchased or are currently renting a Nespresso Professional machine, you can find out more about descaling and maintenance here.
What should I descale my Nespresso machine with?
The Nespresso descaling kit gently frees your machine from all limescale deposits and thus ensures long-lasting coffee enjoyment. You can descale both the Original and Vertuo systems with the same Nespresso descaling kit, shown below.
Descaling mistakes to avoid
Descaling with home remedies such as vinegar, citric acid or baking powder is not recommended for Nespresso Original and Vertuo machines. A descaling kit provides a clear dosage and is much easier to use, all while preventing damage to your machine caused by improper descaling. In addition, unlike some home remedies such as vinegar, a descaling kit doesn't have any unpleasant or intrusive odours.
By ordering a descaling kit from Nespresso, you can be sure that you can receive the best possible care and cleaning for your coffee machine.
Cleaning vs descaling: what's the difference?
While both descaling and cleaning are essential for maintaining your Nespresso machine, they serve different purposes. Cleaning focuses on removing coffee residues and oils from the machine, while descaling targets limescale buildup. Understanding the differences ensures you are regularly completing both tasks to keep your coffee machine in optimal condition and extend its lifespan.
