As part of our mission to create a more sustainable future for the coffee industry and for the world, we made a choice to craft our coffee capsules from aluminium. This infinitely recyclable material allows us to give new life to used capsules and to transform them into all sorts of everyday items. Our recycled capsules go on to become a range of new items from pens and vegetable peelers, and now, in partnership with Vélosophy - a series of eco-friendly bicycles.
Here's how we made the regular two-wheeler even greener.
We made eco-friendly bicycles - with our used capsules in partnership with Velosophy
While riding a bike is already considered to be an extremely eco-friendly choice, we decided to create something even more sustainable. With an aluminium frame made with our used coffee capsules, our eco-friendly range of bikes were created with a reduced environmental footprint.
We partnered with Swedish start-up Vélosophy to co-design a sleek, urban bicycle that would represent the power of recycling and the potential for a more sustainable future.
The Re:Cycle bikes were produced with our Ispirazione Firenze Arpeggio capsule, featuring a front basket, a bell shaped like a Nespresso capsule and two cup holders for your Nespresso coffees, of course.
Each bike required some 300 capsules to produce and for every bike sold, Vélosophy donated another bike to a school girl in Africa through World Bicycle Relief.
These bikes are an incredible example of how recycling can be an investment in the future of our planet and also, in the lives and communities of others. And it's just one of the ways that recycling your Nespresso coffee capsules can create a positive impact on the world we live in.
Bikes made with recycled Nespresso capsules are just the beginning
By making the link between coffee capsules and sustainably produced bikes, and between the developed and developing world, the Nespresso-Vélosophy partnership demonstrates the positive influence of our everyday consumption choices on the world.
But the bikes are just the beginning. Aluminium's potential to be endlessly recyclable means that its potential is infinite.
- Aluminium is 100 percent and infinitely recyclable.
- Aluminium requires up to 95% less energy to recycle than to produce primary metals.
- It keeps its inherent properties no matter how many times it's recycled.
- Our capsules can be recycled and turned into a multitude of useful items
The RE:CYCLE bike is just one of the ways that we bring our recycling efforts to life and we hope it is one that will inspire you to recycle every single one of your capsules.

Our recycling program
Here in Australia, we are committed to making it easy for you to recycle your used capsules. With over 19,000 drop off points and four ways to recycle, doing your part is easy!
Each time you recycle your coffee capsule, you send it off on a journey to a second life. The last drop of your coffee doesn't have to mean the last use for the aluminium and that's why we're making sure recycling is as simple as making our coffee.
How you can recycle your capsules
- Visit your nearest Nespresso Boutique or collection point. Use a bulk recycling box on behalf of your workplace or community
- Bring your used coffee capsules to the nearest Nespresso boutique or participating florist collection point
- Put your used capsules in specially designed Nespresso Australia Post recycling satchels and either post them or take them to a post office.
We're committed to doing business responsibly. We want to find new ways to create innovative change for the better and to make a positive impact on the world we live in.
