What is matcha?
Deriving from the Camellia sinensis plant, matcha is a finely ground powdered green tea. While originating in China, production was banned in the country in the 14th century. Today, Japan produces the most Matcha. Japan is also responsible for developing shade growing of matcha in the 16th century, which produces its vibrant green colour and strong umami flavour.
How is matcha prepared?
To prepare matcha for consumption, the powder is sieved into a bowl before hot water is added. A bamboo whisk is then moved vigorously backward and forward in the shape of a ‘W’ and an ‘M’ until a layer of froth develops on top.
What does matcha taste like?
On its own, matcha has an earthy, vegetal flavour. Because of this, it is not uncommon to add sweeteners such as honey or syrups before serving. Adding a layer of milk and espresso turns this drink into a dirty matcha, which can add an intense flavour.
Why is matcha so popular?
Matcha’s distinct flavour, versatility and attractive colour are partly responsible for the rise in its cultural appeal while others are drawn to it for the health benefits associated with the high levels of antioxidants it contains.
What is the best Nespresso coffee capsule for a Matcha Latte?
The best coffee to pair with your matcha depends on your taste preferences, however, in this recipe we recommend selecting one of our decaffeinated Double Espressos to balance the matcha, which contains caffeine. For a more intense flavour, use our Double Espresso Chiaro Decaffeinato for Vertuo or Arpeggio Decaffeinato for Original Line. If you prefer something a little sweeter, use one of our flavoured coffees such as our limited edition Sweet Vanilla Decaffeinato capsule for Vertuo – don’t forget to press the button twice on machines with Coffee Creations mode for a more concentrated extraction.
