Creating Shared Value: The fundamental role of the agronomists of the Nespresso AAA Program in Colombia

Supporting farmers in applying good agricultural practices is one of the pillars of the Nespresso AAA Program. It is done thanks to the technical support of field agronomists.

Colombia is undoubtedly a country of tradition and coffee culture. Since the emergence of its cultivation in the east of the country, in the eighteenth century, coffee has developed throughout the Colombian territory to become one of its main agricultural resources and a pride for all Colombians.

Colombian coffee is family and artisanal. More than 550,000 coffee families, spread over 22 departments - out of 32 counted in the country - produce the exclusive Arabica coffee species, the only one available in Colombia. The farms are small (96% of the producers have an average of 1.3 hectares of planted coffee) and atomized in extensive territories and several times, difficult to access.

Nespresso , for more than 30 years and especially since 2004 has made Colombia one of the countries of origin of its most representative coffees in blends or blends. In fact, more of the 60% of the capsules of Nespresso contain Colombian coffee.

Nespresso, in order to obtain the highest quality grains, created in 2003 the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality Program or Nespresso > AAA. This program focuses on supporting the more of 110,000 AAA coffee growers globally with a dedicated technical assistance, carried out by agronomists and agronomists and focused on applying sustainable agricultural practices on farms.

In Colombia, there are 131 agronomists who provide technical assistance to the 30,000 coffee growers who belong to the AAA program. 40% (53) are women.
