Single origin coffee guide

A journey to some of the best coffee regions in the world

If somebody asked you where your morning coffee had come from, what would you say? For many, the answer is a home or office Nespresso coffee machine. But where has your coffee really travelled from? Most of us understand very little about the origins of our coffee beans.

Each delicious sip of Nespresso single origin coffee tells a story. Read on to learn how each distinctive landscape, unique climate, and even the altitude of where your coffee is grown and harvested, shapes your coffee experience.

What is single origin coffee?

Single origin coffee is coffee that is sourced from just one location. Nespresso’s Master Origin and Professional range of single origin coffee comes from India, Indonesia, Colombia, Ethiopia, Brazil, Guatemala and Nicaragua.

What does single origin coffee taste like?

No two single origin coffees taste the same. Each origin coffee has its own unique tasting profile and its own set of environmental factors (known as terroir) that modify taste. This includes soil composition, landscape, climate and even the differing altitudes at which the coffee is grown and harvested.

Different countries also adopt unique farming techniques which can alter the taste of the beans. Some of these techniques are deeply rooted in the region’s culture and history.

Single origin flavour profiles

Every Nespresso coffee has its own unique taste. It all depends on the blend, the composition and the terroir.

Master Origin – Ethiopia

Nespresso’s single origin Ethiopia coffee is made with the finest Arabica. Known for its floral aroma and fine, fruity notes, Ethiopian coffee is a popular option among coffee drinkers from all over the world.

Master Origin – Colombia

This fruity, sweet cup with a juicy acidity, red berry aromas and a hint of candied apple is the result of washed Arabica. Master Origin Colombia showcases the skills of the Colombian farmers in picking only ripe fruit and monitoring a longer fermentation to develop the best aromas.

Master Origin – Nicaragua

Master Origin Nicaragua has a smooth honeyed texture and sweet cereal notes. This uniquely nectarous coffee is achieved by “honey” processing - a rare technique that allows the coffee fruit’s natural sugars to infuse the very heart of the bean. It’s an approach to coffee that requires meticulous monitoring by the Nicaraguan farmers, but the result is a deliciously sweet and smooth cup.

Master Origin – India

Master Origin India has long-lasting wood and spice aromatics. The intensity of this origin comes from the monsooned Robusta and Indian Arabica. This is when months of monsoonal winds repeatedly swell and dry the coffee beans. This technique mimics the journey coffee used to take on ships from India to Europe. The Monsooning technique is unique to India’s southwest coast.

Master Origin – Indonesia

Master Origin Indonesia is velvety thick, wildly aromatic, and has notes of cured tobacco. This coffee is crafted in the jungle mists of northern Sumatra by farmers who have perfected the art of wet-hulling.

Because of Indonesia’s hot and humid climate, Sumatran farmers wet-hull their coffee. They remove the parchment when the coffee is soft and moist which then helps the exposed beans to dry faster.

Nespresso Professional Espresso Origin – Brazil

Nespresso Guatemala’s intense dry and malty cereal notes are tempered by its elegant bitterness and a silky-smooth texture. You’ll catch that classic cereal note of Robusta, but it’s laced with a fine, dry vegetal note that adds to the blend’s complexity. Lungo Origin Guatemala is a blend of Guatemalan Arabica and fine Robusta coffees.

The surprising element is that both the Arabica and the Robusta are washed processed. Using the washed process give a silky-smooth texture to the Robusta’s intense dry, malty cereal note and its classic bitterness. Nespresso gives a short and dark roast to both the Arabica and Robusta split in this pro capsule. That develops the boldness while keeping the aromatic complexity alive. Lungo Origin Guatemala is a bold coffee, but its strength is disarming.

Nespresso single origin coffee: a sustainable process

Nespresso sources some of the finest coffee through the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality Program in collaboration with the Rainforest alliance. This program develops long-term relationships with farmers and contributes to the livelihoods of the local communities.

It helps to implement sustainable farming processes and protect the environment resulting in improved quality and yield of crops.

Is single origin coffee better than a blend?

Each distinctive aroma profile within Nespresso’s Master Origin and Professional single origin range has been created using unique coffee processing methods. Each origin is mastered by craftsmanship and inspired by the land so that you can experience the true taste of the region.

In contract to this, blended coffees offer a flavourful, exciting mix of tastes which results in a diverse drinking experience that spans across many different lands and cultures.

The truth is, that neither single origin or blended coffee is better, they are simply different. Single origin is an opportunity to totally immerse yourself in the taste of a region, while blends provide new and interesting ways to enjoy your cup.
