”Doing is Everything” TV Show by Nespresso

“Doing is everything” sets the tone for a series of relaxed conversations about how can we all make a difference in our daily lives, with small gestures: contributing to zero waste in our kitchens, home vegetable gardens, use of coffee grounds in rice fields, reuse of objects that we thought were no longer useful or even the way we move.

Doing is Everything with Chef Kiko

The renowned Portuguese Chef shares several tips for reusing meals and also a recipe for reusing leftover rice: Nasi Goreng.

Doing is Everything with João Cajuda

Traveling can also be sustainable with these tips. Use alternative ways of transport such as train, bicycle or on your foot; leave a note in the hotel room not to exchange towels for new ones. Behaviors that can make big differences in the environment.

Doing is Everything – Recycling is feeding

Recycling is feeding - a Portuguese project that has already been replicated in other countries. Using the coffee grounds from the capsules in an agricultural compost for rice fields at Alcácer do Sal. Every year, the rice is purchased by Nespresso and donated to the Food Bank - another way to reuse coffee grounds.

Doing is Everything with Vanessa Teodoro

Recycling and reusing can also be an art. The Portuguese artist Vanessa Teodoro shows us how creativity is the key to reuse old materials and transform them into a piece of art – the Nespresso windows made by the artist are proof of this.

Doing is Everything with Isabel Silva

Small gestures make a huge difference. In this latest episode, Isabel tells us how she incorporates small sustainable behaviors into her daily life, in an easy and practical way: using reusable bags, having a small vegetable garden at home, recycling her coffee capsules, among others. Good tips to follow and share.

OUR COMMITMENTS

And working together, our biggest achievement are still ahead of us

DOING IS EVERYTHING

We will keep doing everything we can to produce some of the finest coffee that preserves the best of our world.

Here are our three commitments to make coffee a force for good:

  • Reducing, reusing and recycling.
  • Supporting farmers’ livelihoods.
  • Make our cup completely carbon neutral by 2022.

Everything for Positive Impact

We are convinced that coffee can be a force for good because it can shape communities and preserve landscapes for the better.

Our sustainability ambitions are:

  • - Sourcing all our coffee sustainably.
  • - Making our own operations carbon neutral.
  • - Offering to more than 90% of our customers, easy access to a collection point to recycle used capsules.

Everything for Wasting Nothing

We commit to accelerate our efforts in reducing, reusing and recycling.

  • We have already started using recycled aluminium in our capsules
  • We have already set up capsule collection systems for the infinitely recyclable aluminium of our capsules
  • The infinitely recyclable aluminium from our capsules can have a second life after use, and never wasted.

Everything for Going Neutral

The new reality we are all facing has also moved us to accelerate our plans in order to achieve in 2 years what we had initially planned to accomplish over the course of 10 years.

  • We are committed to your cup being carbon neutral by 2022.
  • We are continuing to reduce the footprint of each cup.

Everything For Their Tomorrow

Creating a better tomorrow for farmers has always been our priority. That is why our commitment is to ensure farmers achieve a stable and viable living from coffee.

  • We will continue to build on 20 years of partnership with farmers, paying premium coffee prices and encouraging sustainable practices.
  • We are reducing risk from market and currency unpredictability and ensuring farmers can make a living off their work.
  • We will work with our partners at Fairtrade to increase the share of our certified coffees.

UNCOVERING THE STORY OF A CUP'S CARBON FOOTPRINT

Behind the Scenes

When it comes to your coffee’s carbon footprint, it’s what you don’t see that makes all the difference.

We are working across the entire lifecycle of a single cup of coffee in order to reduce its carbon footprint and help us reach our goals.
So, we invite you to explore the environmental impact of your cup of coffee – from beginning to end.

Three sides to every story

The main chapters of your coffee’s carbon footprint*:

Chapter 1:
How a cup of coffee is prepared.

Chapter 2:
How green coffee is cultivated and transported.

Chapter 3:
How the coffee is packaged.

The Main Actors

Almost half of your coffee’s carbon footprint (45%) comes from how it’s prepared at home from brewing to cup-washing

The precision brewing system uses only what’s needed – optimizing coffee, energy and water usage – making it a sustainable way to enjoy coffee.

The Plot Thickens

The way green coffee is cultivated and transported accounts for 35% of each cup’s carbon footprint*

That’s why using a precise amount of coffee in our capsules and promoting sustainable farming practices are key to improving our carbon footprint and helping us reach our goal of becoming carbon neutral.

A New Chapter

At 14%, packaging is the 3rd contributor to your coffee’s carbon footprint*.

To further reduce it, our goal at Nespresso is to have our Original and Vertuo capsules made using 80% recycled aluminium by the end of 2021.

More about our circularity initiative

Plus, when you recycle capsules you further reduce the carbon footprint of your cup of coffee.

Closing Credit

In 2018, we brought in the expertise of Quantis, a globally recognized sustainability consulting group, to conduct a Product Life Cycle Assessment of a cup of Nespresso coffee.

The study has been reviewed by independent experts and followed ISO 14040/44 standards.

It is based on:

  • 110ml of Lungo Nespresso
  • An Inissia machine
  • In Switzerland
