THE JOURNEY OF THE NESPRESSO CAPSULE

1.SUSTAINABLE
ORIGIN

Our network of more than 400 agronomists has continued to support and advise the more than 110,000 farmers we work with, who belong to the AAA Sustainable Quality program.

2.OVER 70
QUALITY CONTROLS

We carry out more than 70 exhaustive tests from raw material to final product. Nespresso coffee is made at high temperatures that eliminate multiple viruses according to different studies.

3.Capsule
system

Aluminium is the perfect choice for protecting the aromas and freshness of coffee and is infinitely recyclable.

4.Degustation

Our machines are designed for minimum handling. At the touch of a button, you can enjoy the best Nespresso coffee.

5.RECYCLING

The aluminium in Nespresso capsules is recycled and becomes an everyday object. The coffee grounds are given new life as compost and biogas.

RESPONSIBLE RECYCLING

At Nespresso we work hard to supply the excellent coffee in more sustainable ways, caring for the environment and local communities. From the way we obtain our coffee beans to our precision consumption method, we keep sustainability at the heart of everything we do. Our ultimate aim is to create value for society and for our surroundings, one cup at a time. That is why so much of our work entails used coffee capsule recycling whenever this has an environmental impact.

Aluminium was chosen specifically to contribute to the quality and sustainability of our coffees.

RECYCLING, THE FINAL STEP IN A SERIES OF SPECIFIC MEASURES FOR IMPROVING SUSTAINABILITY

As purveyors of high-quality coffee, we have a responsibility to our world beyond coffee tasting and our commitment to recycling. “The Positive Cup” is the name of the corporate programme by which Nespresso undertakes to behave responsibly and to have a positive impact on farmers, society and the environment, whenever possible.

Our coffee-focused commitments encompass obtaining 100% sustainable raw material, distribution, supply, use and aluminium recycling to help combat climate change.

That is way Nespresso cooperates with international projects and carries out local initiatives for a more sustainable future. One of these is the Solidarity rice project. We use coffee grounds from used capsules to enrich compost for agricultural use. The compost is used to grow rice for charitable purposes in the Ebro Delta. Thanks to this action, since 2011 Nespresso has been donating 100 tons of rice to FESBAL every year, a federation that represents 55 food banks all over Spain.

LEARN MORE ABOUT THE PROJECT

Another local initiative is the pilot project in Valencia, where urban residents can recycle aluminium and lightweight steel products in yellow containers in the city streets. This environmental initiatives goes a step beyond coffee capsules, because users can also deposit products like aluminium foil, small candles, wires, and similar objects.

HOW CAN NESPRESSO CAPSULES BE RECYCLED?

Nespresso recycles all the capsules it collects. We recycle to make the future more sustainable.

There are two ways of recycling Nespresso coffee depending on the volume consumed by your company:

• Fewer than 10,000 capsules/year,
find your nearest Nespresso Boutique and take your used capsules there.

• If you consume more than this amount in your business,
contact your sales representative for more information about recycling options.

WHY DO WE USE ALUMINIUM IN THE NESPRESSO CAPSULES?

Nespresso  uses aluminium because it is the best material in existence to preserve coffee freshness, flavour and quality. Aluminium capsules protect the delicate flavours of Nespresso coffee from:

  • Oxygen
  • Sunlight
  • Humidity

But that's not all: aluminium is also infinitely recyclable. In fact, it is thought that 75% of all the aluminium ever produced is still in use today. Aluminium is reused in an extensive variety of products, from motor vehicles to computers, because its properties are not changed by the recycling process, which uses only 5% of the energy required to produce new aluminium.

ALUMINIUM, AN INFINITELY RECYCLABLE MATERIAL

Nespresso has its own pioneering recycling system that converts aluminium capsules into new, long-lasting items.

SUSTAINABLE USE OF ALUMINIUM

Nespresso is committed to making sustainable use of aluminium and we are one of the founders members of the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI). This organisation obtains bauxite from sustainable aluminium, which is a crucial step for reducing the impact of the planet's second-most-frequently-used base metal.

The ASI standard covers essential aspects of the entire aluminium value chain, including protection for biodiversity for bauxite mining, protection of indigenous rights for bauxite mining and smelting, water management and low carbon emissions to air during aluminium production .
