Our goals until 2020

Coffee

100 % sustainably sourced coffee

Our vision is to ultimately source 100 % of Nespresso coffee through the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program. As part of this process, we will assist farmers in their work to achieve the certification standards of our long-term partners Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade International and we will also expand the AAA program in Africa.

Aluminium

100 % sustainably managed Aluminium

Nespresso will increase the capacity to collect used aluminium capsules to 100 % in every country where we do business and seeks to increase recycling rates overall. Additionally, we will source 100% of the virgin aluminium capsule material we use in accordance with the new Aluminium Stewardship Initiative standard.

Klima

100 % carbon efficient operations

Nespresso aims to reduce its overall carbon footprint by a further 10%. We will increase coffee farm resilience to climate change through an extensive agroforestry program and ultimately become 100 % carbon efficient in our operations through these and other measures.

Coffee

100 % SUSTAINABLY SOURCED COFFEE

By 2020, Nespresso will sustainably source 100 % of its coffees through the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program. At the end of 2015, we were already source more than 80 % of our coffee from AAA farms. The expansion of the AAA Program in Africa, especially in Kenya und Ethiopia, will be pivotal to reaching that target, as will building the coffee industry in South Sudan.

We will also assist farmers in their work to achieve high certification standards, for example in water management, biodiversity and fair worker treatment. To this end, we are cooperating with our long-term partners Rainforest Alliance (since 2003) and Fairtrade International.

Sustainable Sourcing

At the core of our endeavours to ensure sustainable coffee sourcing and the well-being of the farmers is the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program, which comprises around 70,000 farmers in 12 coffee-growing countries and is based on the principles of social, ecological and economic sustainability.

Coffee-growing countries: Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Costa Rica, Guatemala, India, Nicaragua, Kenya, Peru, Indonesia, Ethiopia, South Sudan.

AAA Sustainability Program

The Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program was launched in 2003 in collaboration with the Rainforest Alliance. The triple A in the AAA Program refers to its three foundations: quality, sustainability, and productivity.

The goal is to safeguard the long-term supply of the world's highest grade coffee and at the same time ensure social and ecological sustainability and provide support in improving the livelihoods of coffee farmers and their families.

AAA Farmer Future Program

Most coffee farmers are subject to high levels of uncertainty, including lack of insurance, no long-term retirement planning, and risks to both crops and obtainable prices. We are committed to driving innovations in this regard and team up with experts and partners to play our role in reducing these risks.

So in 2014, we launched a pioneering new program, the AAA Farmer Future Program, together with Fairtrade International, the Colombian government and cooperatives in Caldas, to provide the first pension scheme for coffee smallholders.

Unsere Partner

Our approach to sustainability is based on strong and long-term relations with our partners. We work with numerous organizations worldwide, among them NGOs, financial institutions and other companies.

Rainforest Alliance for example is a partner that we have been collaborating with since the launch of the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Program in 2003. The mission of the Rainforest Alliance is to maintain biodiversity and sustainable livelihoods.

Aluminium

100 % SUSTAINABLY MANAGED ALUMINIUM

By 2020, Nespresso will be sourcing 100% of the aluminium it uses in a sustainable manner. Furthermore, we will expand our capacity to collect used aluminium capsules to 100 % wherever the company does business, thereby increasing recycling rates. We will recycle Nespresso capsules collected by the company into new capsules each time it makes sense environmentally.

Another key part of our vision is for 100 % of our virgin aluminium capsules to be produced from material compliant with the new Aluminium Stewardship Initiative standard, which was developed within a multi-stakeholder program led by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Warum Aluminium?

No other material protects the multitude of coffee aromas so well from outside influences. In addition, aluminium also offers another major advantage: It is infinitely recyclable.

In order to attain our vision of sustainable aluminium sourcing, we have set ourselves the goal by 2020 to source 100 % of all virgin aluminium capsule material in compliance with the new Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) standard.

Additionally we started a pilot project for the re-use of used capsules for new Nespresso capsules, as far as it is ecologically wothwhile, e.g. in Great Britan, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Austria and Italy.

Aluminium Stewardship Initiative

Beyond capsule recycling we have committed ourselves to finding methods to change the entire aluminium supply chain. So in late 2014, we founded the Aluminium Stewardship Initiative (ASI) together with seven preeminent partners. The new ASI Performance Standard defines criteria for the implementation of responsible environmental, social and governance principles throughout the entire aluminium value chain. The effort is driven and coordinated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Climate

100 % CARBON EFFICIENT OPERATIONS

Nespresso's vision is to further reduce the company’s carbon footprint by another 10 %. Since 2009 we have already been able to reduce it by 20.7 %. We will increase coffee farm resilience to climate change through an extensive agroforestry program and ultimately become 100% carbon efficient in our operations.

Reducing the carbon footprint

We use a Life Cycle Assessment approach performed by Quantis, a leading environmental consulting firm. This assessment helps us to understand our environmental footprint and develop strategies to optimize our environmental performance. Coffee growing and coffee machine usage have been shown to be the Nespresso activities with the highest impact on our carbon footprint.

As part of our commitments by 2020 we also aim to reduce the carbon footprint by a further 10 % and achieve 100 % carbon efficient operations.

Agroforestry Program

We will increase coffee farm resilience to climate change, i.e. the ability of coffee farms to adapt to the impacts from climate change and associated events, through an extensive agroforestry program.

A farm's climate resilience can be improved through agroforestry measures, e.g. by planting trees to protect the soil, increase biodiversity and absorb carbon dioxide.

Coffee machines

An essential effort to reduce our carbon footprint consists in optimizing the environmental performance of our coffee machines. As part of this we bring together and work with machine manufacturers, engineers and sustainable technology experts to improve the environmental impact of Nespresso coffee machines.

Since 2009, all new Nespresso consumer machine models have been equipped with an automatic stand-by mode or an automatic power-off function in order to reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions. In addition, we develop further ecologically relevant features for our future machine ranges.

Recycling

100 % RECYCLING CAPACITY

Every cup of coffee creates special moments for our customers and also a positive impact on our society and environment.

By 2020, Nespresso will expand its capacity to collect used aluminium capsules to 100 % wherever the company does business, increasing recycling rates overall. Globally the recycling capacity is currently at 86 %, and in Austria that rate is even higher.

Recycling for business customers

Nespresso is offering B2B customers a total of over 1,400 collection points. Capsules can be returned at all Nespresso boutiques, at many communal waste collection centres, and at select postal service partners ("Post Partner"). The Recycling Bag can be requested free of charge when placing an order.

In Vienna, Graz, Linz, Krems as well as in the districts of Wr. Neustadt, Krems Land, Scheibbs, Lilienfeld and Neunkirchen you have the additional option to discard your used capsules in the bins for scrap metal and cans or in the blue bag.

A customized recycling solution is possible for customers with a sufficiently high monthly capsule consumption. Please discuss this with your relationship manager or contact us by calling 0810 981 981.

Recycling in Austria

In 2009, we introduced our own network of collection points for used Nespresso capsules in Austria.

All capsules are collected from the drop-off points by our partner ARA AG and taken to Höpperger GmbH & Co KG in the Tyrol. This company runs a special recycling facility that neatly separates the aluminium of the capsules from the coffee grounds. The recovered aluminium is milled, melted and completely recycled for use in new aluminium products. Due to their high energy potential, the coffee grounds are re-used for the production of biogas, which in turn is converted into electricity.

Did you know that a truckload of Nespresso capsules can supply around 2.5 households with electricity for a year?

FAQ

+ Where can I drop off Nespresso capsules for recycling?
You can return your used Nespresso capsules at our boutiques, at many communal waste collection centres, and at select postal service partners ("Post Partner"). In Vienna, Graz, Linz, Krems as well as in the districts of Wr. Neustadt, Krems Land, Scheibbs, Lilienfeld and Neunkirchen you have the additional option to discard your used capsules in the bins for scrap metal and cans or in the blue bag.
+ What difference does it make if I return the capsules at a Nespresso boutique as opposed to throwing them into a "Blue Bin" in Vienna?
If you return our capsules at a Nespresso boutique they will be recycled through the Nespresso recycling program. In this program, the coffee grounds are separated from the aluminium and fermented into biogas, which in turn is used to produce electricity. The aluminium is melted and used for the production of new aluminium products. When you dispose of capsules in one of the “Blue Bins” (in Vienna), only the aluminium can be recycled, not the coffee grounds.
+ Why does Nespresso use aluminium in its capsules?
Nespresso stands for the highest quality coffee, which we guarantee by preserving the freshness and intensity of the coffee aromas in the best way possible. No other capsule material that we have tested can protect the freshness and aromas of our coffees so well and at the same time interact with our machines to produce such consistently high quality coffee. Aluminium provides the perfect sealing to protect the delicate aromas from air, light, humidity and microorganisms. Aluminium has long been used as industrial and household food packaging material, it is completely tasteless and odourless and can be recycled practically infinitely.
+ Who does Nespresso work with for recycling?
Nespresso capsules are collected by our partner ARES Advanced Recycling Solutions GmbH and taken to the Tyrolean recycling specialist Höpperger GmbH & Co KG. ARES Advanced Recycling Solutions GmbH is a subsidiary of Altstoff Recycling Austria AG (ARA), so Nespresso benefits in many ways from ARA's extensive expertise in waste collection and recycling.
+ What happens with the collected capsules?
Nespresso capsules are collected by our partner ARES Advanced Recycling Solutions GmbH and taken to a recycling specialist in the Tyrol. There, the aluminium parts of the capsule are separated from the coffee grounds. The aluminium recovered from the used Nespresso capsules is melted in aluminium plants and processed into new aluminium products. The aluminium can be completely recycled. The coffee is fermented into biogas using a highly advanced process. The biogas can be used to produce electricity. One truckload of Nespresso capsules can actually cover the annual electricity need of 2.5 single-family homes.
+ What is the Nespresso Recycling Bag?
At Nespresso we endeavour to offer our customers the best possible service. In keeping with the aim of ensuring sustainability, we decided to introduce the Nespresso Recycling Bag as a convenient and simple method for our customers to recycle capsules and reduce the impact on the environment. The bag is made of FSC-certified paper and has an inner lining made from renewable resources, which makes it tear-resistant and waterproof.
+ How do I get the Nespresso Recycling Bag?
You can request the Recycling Bag when placing a coffee order, both online and by telephone or fax. To request a Recycling Bag online, please add it to your shopping cart together with your online order.
+ What if I bring my used capsules in a plastic bag? What happens to that bag in the recycling process?
You are welcome to take your used Nespresso capsules to a collection point in a plastic bag and throw the bag into the recycling container. When processing the collected capsules, i.e. separating them into aluminium and coffee grounds, the plastic parts are included with the aluminium parts. Aluminium and plastics are then separated in a second plant so that both fractions can be recycled.
+ I have heard that as a business customer, I can have my used capsules picked up?
Our B2B capsules are indeed recyclable too. As a business customer you can return your used capsules at the Nespresso boutiques, at many communal waste collection centres, and in any of the bins for scrap metal and cans ("Blue Bins") in Vienna. If your monthly capsule consumption is sufficiently high, a customized recycling solution may be agreed for your location (your company site). Please discuss this with your relationship manager or contact us by calling 0810 981 981.
+ We have a used capsules container for B2B capsules. Many of our colleagues have consumer capsules at home, can we collect them in the same container for recycling?
Yes, you may collect all Nespresso capsules in the same container for recycling purposes. The capsules are processed in the same facility, so it is not necessary to collect them separately.
+ What material are our coffee capsules made of?
The business capsules differ from household capsules not only in terms of shape. Our business capsules are made from a composite material of different plastic layers and an aluminium layer. On the inside, the capsule has a plastic lining so that there is no direct contact between the coffee and the aluminium.
+ Is Nespresso coffee Fairtrade certified?
Some of the coffee that we purchase is Fairtrade certified, as a number of the farmers in our AAA Program are also Fairtrade certified. However, we focus our sustainable sourcing efforts on the Nespresso AAA program, which includes around 70,000 coffee farmers in twelve countries. The AAA program was developed in collaboration with the Rainforest Alliance to safeguard the long-term supply of the world's highest grade coffee. In addition, with that program, we also aim to protect the natural environment as well as the farmers' wellbeing. Our vision goes far beyond just a particular kind of labelling.
