At Nespresso, we believe that quality and sustainability go hand in hand – from the coffee cherry all the way through to our capsules. Moreover, because of our strict coffee selection process and our sourcing based on select terroirs, only a small amount of the coffee grown globally meets our specific taste and aroma profiles and our high standards of quality.

In order to provide our consumers with these premium coffees in the future, sustainability along the value chain is essential. Our sustainability strategy’s vision is to create a cup of coffee that has a positive impact on the world. This is The Positive Cup.

We will expand our capacity to collect used aluminium capsules to 100% wherever the company does business by 2020. At the same time, we are continuing to work on using responsibly produced aluminium in accordance with ASI standards. Moreover, in offering the first coffee in capsules made using 80% recycled aluminium, we have reached a milestone in our commitment to sustainability. For us, sustainability is a path that we have been following consistently for years. That's why, by the end of 2021, all Original and Vertuo Line capsules will be produced using 80% recycled aluminium.

Der grüne Punkt

Der Grüne Punkt (The Green Dot) was founded in 1990 as the first dual system. The first system of its kind, it provides the nationwide collection of used sales packages and obtains raw materials from them for the closed-cycle economy. Today Der Grüne Punkt is a leading provider of take-back systems.

Nespresso has had their capsules licensed with Der Grüne Punkt voluntarily since 1993. Capsules can thus easily be disposed of through the Yellow Bag, Yellow Bin or at communal recycling centers. After recycling, the aluminium can be used for new products.
