Frequent questions
Are Nespresso capsules recyclable?
Nespresso capsules are made of aluminum, the best material to protect the freshness and flavor of our coffee, which has the extra benefit of being infinitely recyclable. Moreover, the coffee is donated to Fundación Huerta Niño for the production of Compost. Find out more at http://www.mihuerta.org.ar/
Why does Nespresso use aluminum for its coffee capsules?
Nespresso uses aluminum for its coffee capsules because it has the double benefit of being the best material to protect the quality of our coffee and it’s 100% recyclable.
What is done with the capsules and the recycled coffee?
Nespresso sends used capsules to a specialized treatment plant where coffee and aluminum are separated. The coffee is donated to Fundación Huerta Niño for the production of Compost and the aluminum is melted and transformed into new objects.
Should the used capsules be stored in any particular way?
It is recommended to store the capsules in a closed container. For this purpose, Nespresso developed a Recycling Bin and Recycling Bags with an airtight seal to prevent odors and spills. Also used capsules can be delivered in any waste bag if it is close.
What is Fundación Huerta Niño?
FHN works in disadvantaged schools, where are cases of malnutrition, building half hectare communal organic gardens to provide a sustainable solution to children's nutrition. Find out more at http://www.mihuerta.org.ar/
Have you ever considered using plastic capsules instead of aluminum capsules?
Plastic capsules need additional materials to preserve freshness and flavor. We believe that aluminum is the most sustainable material for our capsules because it reduces the need to use additional protective materials to preserve freshness and flavor, and most importantly, it is infinitely recyclable.
What is the carbon footprint generated by the portioned coffee?
We believe that portioned coffee makes sense from a sustainable perspective. We use the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) to measure the carbon footprint of our products. We are working in all stages of life cycle of our products to reduce the environmental impact. Since 2009, we have reduced the carbon footprint in each cup of Nespresso coffee by 20%.
How are Nespresso Professional line used capsules recycled?
The capsules of the Professional line are recycled under the same process as the household capsules.
