CUP SIZE

Each Grand Cru is developed in a given cup size to deliver an optimal taste and texture.

OVER-EXTRACTION: cup size is critical as too much water through too few grounds results in unbalanced flavour extraction.

Green Coffee species and variety (various types of Arabicas and Robustas)

Country of origin/terroir

The taste of a Grand Cru depends on its blend composition and terroir.

ENVIRONMENT AND CLIMATE

A TERROIR

At Nespresso, we define intensity as being a combination of roastiness, body and bitterness, not caffeine content.

Like the bitterness, the body and the roastiness, the acidity is one parameter that allows us to describe the taste.

Altitude

Soil Composition

Climate Temperature, exposure to sun/rainfall, humidity, etc.

INTENSITY

Intensity results from the combination of:

Body

Coffee fullness or weight in the mouth. A coffee with body is thick and dense, whereas a light-bodied coffee is perceived as watery, fluid

Bitterness

Think of dark chocolate, baking cocoa, aspirin, chicory. Coffee is bitter.

Roastiness

Perception of a coffee roast flavor, independent of the roast level.

At Nespresso, we define intensity as being a combination of roastiness, body and bitterness, not caffeine content.

Like the bitterness, the body and the roastiness, the acidity is one parameter that allows us to describe the taste.

AROMATIC NOTES

Dominant aromatic notes define the aromatic profile, the character of the Grand Cru, regardless of its intensity.

Aromatic notes are clustrered into 3 main families:

Fruity / Flowery

  • Flowery

  • Citrus

  • Fruity-winy

MILD

  • Honey

  • Cereals

  • Roasted

INTENSE

  • Cocoa

  • Spicy

  • Woody

  • Intensely
    roasted

MILK RECIPES

Each coffee creates a unique alchemy with milk

Most people typically use intense espresso blends in their coffee drinks in the belief that the aroma of subtler blends will be diluted by the milk. Each Grand Cru, even with a delicate and subtle character when black, develops new dimensions when combined with milk.

The result ? This creates an almost infinite palette of taste variations starting from the same Grand Cru. Depending on which Grand Cru you use, a Cappuccino or Latte Macchiato can have many different, delicious flavors.

The coffee journey to perfection

The fruit of the Coffea Rubiaceae tree, coffee grows between the tropics of Capricorn and Cancer.

As with wine, great coffee draws its characteristics from its terroir: the result of harmony between soil, weather conditions, variety, aspect and altitude. We call the tree’s fruit a “cherry” for its luscious red color when ripe and its cherry-like shape. As with any fruit, coffee tastes best when harvested perfectly ripe.

FAQ

  • How much caffeine is in each Nespresso Capsule?

Moderate coffee consumption has its place in a healthy and balanced diet. A moderate coffee consumption corresponds to around 300-400 mg caffeine. Pregnant and lactating women are recommended to reduce their caffeine intake to 200-300 mg per day.

The caffeine content per brewed Grand Cru will vary between 50 and 120 mg. This variation between the Grands Crus depends on the proportion of Robusta in the blend and the quantity of coffee used to prepare a cup (the capsule load). For consumers who want to limit their caffeine intake, Nespresso offers a full decaffeinated range consisting of 3 Grand Crus with various tastes and cup sizes. Our decaffeinated blends contain 2-3 mg caffeine per cup. The intensity of a coffee is defined by the roasting degree, the body and the bitterness, not by the caffeine content. If you are concerned about potential sensitivity to coffee we advise you to consult your health practitioner.

    - The ristretto range (25 ml) ranges from 60 to 80 mg caffeine per cup. Kazaar is an exception as it is very high in Robusta and contains 120 mg caffeine.
    - The espresso coffees (40 ml) range from 50 to 80 mg caffeine per cup.
    - The Lungo coffees (110 ml) range from 60 to 80 mg caffeine per cup.
    - The decaffeinated coffees contain 2 to 3 mg caffeine per cup.

  • How many calories are in each Nespresso Capsule?

Coffee is a pure and natural product, consisting only of water and roasted coffee bean extract. Unsweetened black coffee is naturally low in calories ( <1 kcal). No additives are present in our capsules. Adding milk to the coffee can bring additional nutritional benefits to the coffee. Milk is a good source of various essential nutrients. Nevertheless, milk, cream and sugar provide calories which might become significant if regularly consumed.

  • Do Nespresso Capsules contain Allergerns or preservatives?

Nespresso Grands Crus, as well as the Limited Editions and the Holiday Variations, do not contain any allergens, including but not limited to gluten, lactose or nuts. Nespresso Grands Crus blends are purely composed of 100% coffee, and hermetically sealed to prevent exposure to air and moisture, further protecting them from any contamination. Any references to 'malt', “milk”, or “cocoa” notes are components of the aromatic profile (naturally occurring within the bean) and do not suggest their physical presence in the capsule.

The Variations are 100% allergen free. Based on our intensity 6 Grand Cru, Livanto, the Variations are exquisitely crafted with naturally extracted ingredients with no added sugars or preservatives.
