Paul Cayard

Nespresso Cup Race Ambassador

Cayard has left his mark on sailing's most important disciplines and events, becoming one of the international racing scene's most iconic figures. He became the first American skipper to ever win the Whitbread Round the World Race (fully crewed, with stopovers) in 1998. Before that he was part of the USA Olympic sailing team in 1984 for the Los Angeles games and in 2004 (Athens).

Cayard’s name is mostly associated with the America's Cup having taken part in six editions, starting as sail trimmer in 1983 aboard Defender, having won the Louis Vuitton Cup as skipper of Il Moro de Venezia in 1992 and most recently as Sports Director of Desafio Espanol in the 32nd America’s Cup. As a keen and successful match racer, he revels in close-combat racing and has six world championship titles to his name. One of his strong points is undoubtedly the considerable depth of his experience, ranging from dinghies to Maxis and encompassing round-the-world racing. During the 2005-2006 edition of the Volvo Ocean race, Cayard skippered Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean winning the final leg into Gothenburg to place second overall.

Cayard grew up in San Francisco with strong European roots and speaks French and Italian fluently. “Portofino is an iconic sailing venue in Italy – the sailing conditions in Portofino can be a bit challenging, it’s a light airs place but it’s a beautiful place and everyone gets together and tries the boats out and has plenty of good times ashore and it will be a fantastic weekend,” commented Paul. “I think the Nespresso Cup is going to be a fantastic event in that regard and we’ll have a nice mix of professional sailors and people who are really passionate about the sport so you can’t get much better than that!”
