Nespresso at The 2010 Ryder Cup
The Ryder Cup, one of the most coveted trophies in the world of professional golf, has always been more about prestige than prize money. The biennial competition began in 1927 in Massachusetts, following an informal match the previous year when American and British golfers met at Wentworth. Among the appreciative gallery was an English seed-packet merchant called Samuel Ryder. "I will give £5 to each of the winning players,” Ryder vowed, “and give a party afterwards, with champagne and chicken sandwiches."
Today, The Ryder Cup competition has broadened to match the best golfers not only from Great Britain and Ireland but from all of continental Europe against the Americans. After 83 years and 37 official matches, The Ryder Cup has become one of the most compelling events in world sport. No other golfing competition comes close to the emotion, intensity and atmosphere of The Ryder Cup.
The introduction of players from continental Europe into The Ryder Cup fold in 1979 marked a new chapter and after years of US domination the tide started to turn. With Europe on board, there have been some exceptional encounters over the last three decades, such as Europe’s first win on US soil in 1987, the tied match at The Belfry in 1989, the famous ‘War on the Shore’ at Kiawah Island in 1991 and the “Battle of Brookline” in 1999, when the US won The Ryder Cup back after suffering two defeats. Europe went on the rampage after the turn of the century, winning three successive Ryder Cups for the first time, with a record nine point winning margin in both 2004 and 2006, before the US once again hit back with victory in Valhalla in 2008.
The Ryder Cup is a natural venue for Nespresso, Preferred Supplier to the 2010 match. For three days starting October 1, 2010, Nespresso will tee up an estimated 500,000 Grand Crus, offering moments of genuine relaxation and pleasure — the Ultimate Coffee Experience — to players and guests at several Nespresso bars placed around The Celtic Manor Resort in Wales, where The 2010 Ryder Cup is taking place.
In addition to The Ryder Cup, Nespresso serves as the Official Coffee for other major golfing events, such as the European Masters, which Nespresso has sponsored for the past 19 years. The most recent European Masters event took place in September 2009, in Crans Montana, Switzerland, and served as the first qualifying tournament for The 2010 Ryder Cup.
