Konstantin Grcic

Konstantin has the wind in his sail

For the Nespresso Cup Trophy we have called upon a key figure in design.  When one of the most gifted creators of his generation flirts with sailing, the combination is magical.

A spotlight on a designer like no other.

From Munich to Portofino is a hop, skip and a jump for Konstantin Grcic.  The designer has created a great link between his offices in the quiet Bavarian capital and in the chicest little port in Italy:  the Nespresso Cup Trophy.  It’s a story of a wonderful meeting between two aesthetic universes:  design and sailing.  Because the Wally aesthetic and the Grcic brand complement each other perfectly.  It’s the tale of the greatest of collaborations.

2010 sees Konstantin Grcic chosen as the designer of the year by Wall Paper, the magazine of reference in design.  A new accolade.  In 2007 he received the same title from Maison & Objet in Paris and picked up honours from the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, with a new retrospective.  His already cult objects were brought in contact with the most significant items in the history of design.  His Mayday lamp, distinguished by the very prestigious honour of the Compasso d’Oro (the greatest award in the field) was alongside a Charlotte Perriand stool.  In short, the Munich designer has become one of the greats.  Who has not glanced at his Chair One (issued in 2003) an unbelievable balance between emptiness and fullness, without also becoming a collector?  A neo-futuristic aesthetic which Nespresso hasn’t failed to notice.

Nespresso, creator of fast machines, pure objects of desire, and lover of excellence, was the perfect match for Konstantin Grcic, inventor of sleek and innovative creations.  The relationship between the brand and the designer started in 2006:  Konstantin Grcic became a member of the jury at an international competition run by Nespresso for young inventors in the Salone del Mobile in Milan.  In 2009 the two were linked again.  The German maestro designed part of the CitiZ collection.  For the Nespresso Cup Trophy, he has totally immersed himself in the sailing world, and has observed the lifestyle that fascinates him.  Just as an actor investigates the character to best understand the role, he is passionate about everything concerning Wally.  “I looked for any information which could help me understand the specific world of yacht racing, its history, the people, the boats, the places.  I studied the structures and functions of these high performance boats (…) right up to how the athletes posed with their trophies.”  And so Konstantin Grcic created the Nespresso Cup Trohpy…
