Francesco de Angelis
Nespresso Cup Race Ambassador
Born in Naples in 1960, Francesco de Angelis became the first Italian skipper to ever win the prestigious Louis Vuitton Cup, helming Luna Rossa in the 1999-2000 edition of the event leading up to the America's Cup. Doing so, he also prevented an American crew from entering the finals, which had never been seen before in the Cup's history! Francesco de Angelis has a lot of experience on the inshore circuit at the highest level, and his track record includes six World Champion titles as well as two wins in the Swan Cup and in the Sardinia Cup. The Italian skipper was a key figure in the very successful Prada - Luna Rossa America's Cup campaigns, and in 2007 decided to let a "youngster" named James Spithill have a go at the helm… The same Spithill who, three years later, would give the USA the pleasure of recapturing the Cup! “It will be great to compete in the inaugural Nespresso Cup in Portofino. The venue is unique and it will be fantastic to see the harbour filled by big yachts like the Wallys,” said Francesco de Angelis. “The racing there is never easy and all the Class Divisions will be competitive given the high level of the teams. Racing in Portofino is always a challenge and hopefully this event will become a classic."
