Enjoying 'Jerrycan' in Cannes
24.05.08 / No, the beach wasn't happening today. But cloudy skies weren't going to stop us from enjoying one last, ultimate Cannes moment. So we headed indoors to watch a few more films we’d have trouble seeing anywhere but here, specifically the nine short films selected for this year’s Festival competition. We liked more than a few of them, but the one that really stayed with us was an Australian film called Jerrycan directed by Julius Avery. Jerrycan packs a lot of childhood trauma into 13 minutes. The main character, Nathan, seems to suffer from a lack of parenting, but that’s nothing compared to the suffering induced by the local bully. The director’s website (juliusavery.com) tells us that he filmed Jerrycan in Victoria using non-actors, and that he intends to make a feature-length film from the short. Something tells us this isn't the last time we'll see him in Cannes. — R.K.
