Nespresso is committed to reducing the carbon footprint by 20% per cup by 2013.
Since 2005, Nespresso has used a process called life cycle assessment (LCA) to understand our environmental footprint. Today, in addition to our own in-house assessments, LCA studies are conducted by specialist environmental consultants Quantis. LCA is a valuable tool in making decisions about how to best optimise our environmental footprint. We use an accepted methodology that allows us to understand how we generate carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. LCA helps us understand how best to reduce our carbon footprint within every aspect of our business, from the cherry to the cup, without creating negative environmental impacts elsewhere.
Our newest Production and Distribution Centre in Avenches has been designed to incorporate a number of environmental efficiencies, especially in terms of heating and cooling the building. For example, recaptured energy from the production and distribution centres is used to heat part of the building and provide heating for the local community. An innovative energy recovery system at Avenches reduces the amount of energy needed to roast the green coffee by approximately 15%. For each roaster, this saving is roughly equivalent to the energy used by 90 households in a year.. Nearly 7,300 cubic metres of rain water, equivalent to two and a half Olympic swimming pools, has been collected from the roof and used for various activities, including flushing the toilets and watering the green areas. Additionally, between 2009 and 2010, we reduced waste at Nespresso factories by 23.5% for each tonne of capsules of Grand Cru coffee we produced.
We have brought together a network of experts focused on designing ever more innovative, high-performing and greener machines for our Club Members. The network aims to continually improving the energy consumption, carbon emissions and recyclability of each range of Nespresso machines.
Since 2009, all new Nespresso machine ranges have all been equipped with an energy-saving mode, and from 2011, all our machines will have an automatic power-off function, as pioneered by today’s Pixie models. Pixie, our latest innovation, automatically switches off after nine minutes of inactivity, consuming 40% less energy than previous models.
