The Rainforest Alliance
The Rainforest Alliance is an international, non-profit, non-governmental organization (NGO) founded in 1987. Their stated mission is to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behaviour. The Rainforest Alliance's agriculture program supports the international secretariat of the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN), a coalition of leading conservation groups that links responsible farmers with conscientious consumers by means of the Rainforest Alliance Certified seal of approval.
Since 2003, Nespresso and Rainforest Alliance have worked together to develop and implement the AAA Sustainable Quality Program. The AAA program is an innovative package of recommendations for farmers, helping them conserve the natural resources on which their farms depend, be good neighbors to local communities and improve the quality of their beans. More than 50% of the farms supplying Nespresso.
A key commitment of the Ecolaboration agreement signed by Nespresso and Rainforest Alliance in June 2009 is to bring 80% of the farmers into the AAA program, which now includes meeting the SAN standards for Rainforest Alliance Certification.
