The Colombian Coffee Growers Federation (FNC)

  Coffee      Farmers

A non-profit business association founded in 1927 as a business cooperative that promotes the production and exportation of Colombian coffee to achieve its mission of improving the quality of life of Colombia's coffee growers.

It currently represents more than 500,000 producers, most of whom are small family owned farms. The Federation supports research and development in the production of coffee through grants to local universities and through its sponsored research institute, known as Cenicafé. The Federation also monitors production to ensure export quality standards are met and it is very active in all areas related to sustainability (see www.SustainabilityThatMatters.org).

In the Colombian regions of Cauca and Nariño, Nespresso, the FNC and the local communities have teamed up to revitalize the production of highest quality sustainable coffee. They are achieving this through technical assistance, follow-up to continuous improvement plans, process verification and assessment, training, adaptation and improvement of coffee milling and drying processes, adopting good pre-harvest and post-harvest practices, handling waste waters generated on the farm to avoid environmental pollution, and applying sustainable agricultural best practices. More than US$4.0 million is being invested by Nespresso, the Federation and the local communities in this project.
