About our capsules commitment
More on our capsules and used capsule collection systems
Nespresso launched the AluCycle™ Initiative with a twin commitment. Firstly, Nespresso is working with the International Union of the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) – the largest membership environmental organisation in the world – to co-convene an industry roundtable on improving the sustainability performance of the aluminium used for the Nespresso capsules. Secondly, Nespresso will put systems in place to triple its capacity to collect used capsules for recycling to 75% by 2013. For example in Switzerland, there are more than 2,400 collection points in Nespresso boutiques and outlets retailing machines, local waste collection centres, numerous regional recycling companies, and street collection points. Nespresso plans to extend its collection system for used capsules nationwide as it learns from pilot project with its own collecting and recycling schemes and preferably also through national packaging waste systems (green dot).
Aluminium is the best material available today to protect our highest quality coffee from factors such as oxygen and sunlight that could compromise taste and quality. Aluminium is also infinitely recyclable. After use it continues to retain all its properties, which makes it possible to recycle it into new aluminium products. By collecting and recycling used capsules, we are able to reduce our environmental impact. Recycling aluminium produces only 5% of the carbon emissions compared with primary aluminium. Because it is lightweight, using aluminium also provides transportation and environmental savings when compared to other packaging materials.
