General information about the Ecolaboration program and our sustainability commitments
What is Ecolaboration™?
You say Nespresso only uses the highest quality coffee. What is so special about it?
What are the main sustainability commitments of Nespresso?
Will Nespresso communicate regularly on its commitments?
Who are the Nespresso stakeholders/partners in Ecolaboration™?
Ecolaboration™ is a platform to work together with our partners to protect the future of our Grands Crus for coffee-lovers worldwide and manage the social and environmental impacts of our business, while improving the lives of coffee farmers and their communities.
Nespresso coffee experts only look for the finest beans with a particular taste and specific aromatic characteristics, to create the Nespresso Grand Cru blends. Each coffee is evaluated through tasting to ensure that the coffee meets the Nespresso quality standards and matches the exact aroma profiles.
Nespresso is committed to offering its consumers only the finest gourmet coffees. Only the top 1 to 2% of the world’s green coffee crop meets Nespresso specific taste and aroma profiles. Throughout the year, Nespresso green coffee experts and their green coffee supply partners ensure these highest quality standards by actively seeking out such coffees cultivated in farming communities in the world premium coffee-producing areas. These are often remote regions, where a combination of altitude, climate and rich soil produce the distinctive flavours, aromas and complex character that make up Nespresso Grands Crus.
Within the Ecolaboration™ framework Nespresso is making the following three commitments by 2013:
- To source 80% of coffee from the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Coffee Program, including Rainforest Alliance certification.
- To put collection systems in place to triple our collection capacity to recycle used capsules to 75% by 2013.
- To reduce the carbon footprint of each cup of coffee by 20%.
The Ecolaboration™ website, www.ecolaboration.com will include Ecolaboration™ related content, results and future ideas and initiatives, communicated in ways that will be accessible to a range of internal and external audiences, including Nespresso Club Members.
Nespresso has been working closely with the Rainforest Alliance for the last six years to implement the Nespresso AAA Sustainable Quality™ Coffee Program. In addition Nespresso is working with other NGOs such as TechnoServe, academic institutions such as INCAE in Costa Rica, development institutions such as the International Finance Corporation, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (ICUN), coffee suppliers, and many other expert organisations to assure the long-term sustainable success of its program. Each of these is a critical Ecolaboration™ partner, with a unique and important role to play.
