Designing a robust eco-monitoring system
In many smallholder coffee farms across the world, coffee is grown under a forest-like canopy of shade trees, which protect the coffee from the bright tropical sun. Since shaded coffee farms hardly affect local flora and fauna, original ecosystems are often largely untouched by smallholder coffee cultivation.
To ensure that we are helping to protect biodiversity in coffee growing regions, we need to measure the impacts we have on local ecosystems. That’s why alongside our AAA Sustainable Quality™ program, Nespresso is developing a long-term project with IUCN to better understand the biodiversity impacts of our operations in coffee countries of origin, especially around coffee growing. A part of this work involves designing a robust eco-monitoring system to evaluate possible future initiatives.
