Improving efficiency across our operations

Our new Production Centre in Avenches is leading the way in sustainable production of our highest quality coffees.

Each day around 140 tonnes of coffee arrive at our factory in Avenches, Switzerland. Once the beans have been shipped from the country of origin, they are rail freighted to our Production Centres, via a private branch line connected to the national rail network. Transporting our coffee beans by rail helps to improve the environmental footprint of our operations.

Once at the factory, there are further environmental savings. Our newest Production and Distribution Centre in Avenches has been designed to incorporate a number of environmental efficiencies, especially in terms of heating and cooling the building. For example, recaptured energy from the production and distribution centres is used to heat part of the building and provide heating for the local community.

An innovative energy recovery system at Avenches reduces the amount of energy needed to roast the green coffee by approximately 15%. For each roaster, this saving is roughly equivalent to the energy used by 90 households in a year. Nearly 7,300 cubic metres of rain water, equivalent to two and a half Olympic swimming pools, has been collected from the roof and used for various activities, including flushing the toilets and watering the green areas. Additionally, between 2009 and 2010, we reduced waste at Nespresso factories by 23.5% for each tonne of capsules of Grand Cru coffee we produced.
