Of all the coffee cultivated around the world only 10% is categorised as specialty or gourmet coffee, denoting higher quality than mainstream coffees. Of this coffee only a further 10-20% meet the specific taste and aroma profile of the Nespresso Grands Crus. With our partners, the green coffee suppliers we actively seek out the regions and localities where such coffee is cultivated, areas characterised by a unique combination of type of soil, altitude and climatic conditions.
These areas are often in remote mountainous hinterlands, farmed by smallholders often with only a hundred or so trees. Given the rarity of these precious coffees, Nespresso sets out to develop long-term relationships with the farmers and the local community in these regions.
